Oh, what a night! We want to thank everyone who showed up and stepped out for both Club Kaya and Portrait of a Publisher as a Political Project — works in celebration of Kaya’s 30th anniversary. Alan Nakagawa, Kaya’s artist-in-residence, ended his year-long project exploring Kaya’s archives with an event that included performances from Kaya authors and family, original compositions inspired by Kaya books, interactive sound boxes, and (everyone’s favorite) literaoke! Portrait of a Publisher as a Political Project, which draws from Kaya’s history and archive to show the (near impossible!) journey of a radically independent press, will be showcased at USC’s One Archives until Sat, Apr 26 2025. Come visit, and stay tuned for more exhibition-related programming!

There are too many people that we would like to thank for making this event a reality. Thank you so much to USC’s Visions and Voices, Edwin Hill (French, Italian, American Studies and Ethnicity), Sunyoung Lee (Kaya Press, American Studies and Ethnicity), and Ana Iwataki (Comparative Studies in Literature and Culture), the Creativity, Theory, and Politics Research Cluster (American Studies and Ethnicity), the ONE Archives at the USC Libraries, and Asian Pacific American Student Services. We’d also love to thank Umi Hsu, Elizabeth Ito, Nisa Karnsomport, Shan Haikh, Jonathan Leal, Truong Tran, Erin O’ Brien, Cirilo Domine, Alison De La Cruz, Pattie Lin, Jean Park, Patrick Shiroishi, Robin Sukhadia, and everyone who performed, celebrated, contributed, and supported in every way.
