Kaya Press is thrilled to announce the official publication of Hapa Japan: History Vol. 1 and Hapa Japan: Identities & Representations Vol. 2 edited by Duncan Ryūken Williams.
Described by Ruth Ozeki as “essential reading for all citizens of our transcultural, transnational, boundless, borderless, beautifully mixed-up world,” these volumes bring together scholarship on the rich historical and contemporary experiences and representations of global Hapa Japanese.
Volume 1 is the first substantial collection of essays to survey the history of global mixed-race identities of persons of Japanese descent. Volume 2 picks up where Volume 1 left off and plots the wide range of Hapa representations in contemporary film, art and society.
We’re excited to launch these volumes at the third annual Hapa Japan Festival, which coincides this year with the Critical Mixed Race Conference, both in Little Tokyo and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The books will be featured and will be available throughout the festival and conference, and Williams will be speaking directly about them at these following events:
