Last week our Managing Editor Neela Banerjee volunteered at the Pitchess Detention Center for SEED LOVE, an arts and healing pop-up held by Dignity and Power Now at L.A. County Jails. Neela brought the Kaya typewriters and engaged visitors in book-making and letter-writing. Visitors typed letters to their families and decorated books and letters with quotes from Writers of Color, our #LitinColor project. In addition to these activities, there was also free food and drink, an arts table, herbs and flowers, and a body worker.

On Facebook, Neela writes that her favorite moment was seeing a little boy get his first ever massage. She says, “Love, care, nurturing — that’s what we need to associate with black boys. Not death. Not death. Not death.”
